placet hîc adscribere Etymologici magni verba, quae sunt: Τόπος ἦν παῤ Α᾿θηναίοις, εν ῳ κοιναὶ σιτήσεις τοῖς δημοσίοις ἐυεργέταις ἐδίδοντο, ὅθεν καὶ Πρυτανεῖον ἐκαλεῖτο, ὁιονεὶ πυροταμεῖον. Πυρὸς γὰρ ὁ σῖτος: τουτέςτι τοῦ σίτου δημοσίου ταμεῖον. Locus erat apud Athenienses, in quo cuilibet ex populo, bene de Rep. merito, alimenta praeberi solebant, Unde et Prytaneum appellabatur. quasi frumenti horreum. Est enim πρυτανεῦσαι nihil aliud, quam Ταμιεῦσαι, et πρυτανὶς ὁ σιτοφύλαξ. In hoc ipso loco, ut sibi in posterum alimenta suppeditarentur, quoad viveret, dixit se meritum Socrates propediem moriturus. Suidas: Πρυτανεῖον παρωτοῖς Α᾿θηναίοις οἴκισκος δημόσιος, ἔνθα ἐσιτεῦντο δημόσια τῆς τοιαύτης τιμῆς παῤ ἀυτοῖς τυχόντες: ἐπὶ γὰρ μεγάλοις κατορθώμασι, τὴν τοιαύ την ἀπεδίδοντο χάριν. Nic mirum, quod Scholiastes, in Aristophanis Pace, prodiderit: ὅτι χρησμολόγοι μετεῖχον τῆς εν πρυτανείῳ σιτήσεως. Atque hic facilius intellexerit quilibet, cur scripserit Plutarchus, Sympos. 4. Ubi Palmerius: Mutat vir doctus (inquit) legendo ἄγαν, et credit omnem huius loci obscuritatem hâc mutatione illustrare. Sed fateor, me non capere, qui velit per haec verba, quae subiungit: Conqueritur piscator ille obiter, et significat otiosum se plane, et longe opulentiam a se abesse; non esse tamen quod sollicitus sit, cum τὸ λυχνίον εν πρυτανείῳ sit, quod quidem λυχνίον semper habet τὸ ἄγαν. Intelligit Lychnum, qui Athenis in gratiam Vulcani πῦρ ἀθάνατον habebat, sicut Romanorum Vesta. In quibus verbis non video, quomodo conveniat piscatori egeno et Siculo se consolari ob perpetuitatem ignis, qui Athenis in Prytaneo servabatur. Plura ad hunc locum doctissimus Casaubonus, qui nihil mutat, et meliorem sententiam exhibet, sed tamen, quae non usque vera mihi videtur, et mihi non satisfacit, nec tamen aliquid habeo quid dicam.
